Dear hosting customer: Don’t try to use that space that we sold you

Recently, there’s been a trend among hosts to not allow customers to use their purchased disk space. BlueHost, for example, outlines the following in their TOS:

Backup Storage
Bluehost Web Hosting intends to offer services to host web sites, not store data. Using an account primarily as an online storage space for archiving electronic files is prohibited.

Does BlueHost not want you to use the unlimited disk space that they’re now offering??? Seems odd.

I’ve only come across these types of ridiculous policies at hosts like BlueHost; the hosts that oversell and offer things that they think/hope most of their customers won’t use. But, as the BlueHost example proves, once you actually use what you purchased, they will boot you or try to get more money out of you by demanding that you upgrade to a pricier hosting package.
